FRENCH-GERMAN MASTER IN MUSICOLOGY

From September 2009 the University of Saarland at Saarbrücken offers an integrated French-German Master of Arts in musicology. The course is offered in cooperation with the Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV). Students spend the first year in Paris, the second together with their French fellow students in Saarbrücken. The master diploma is issued by both institutions and recognized in both countries. The course is research-oriented and includes a training period which allows contacts with research institutes and cultural institutions in Paris and Saarbrücken.

The course concentrates particularly on the characteristics of music history in Germany and France with a special focus on the process of cultural transfer. Due to the differences in teaching and research, the students are introduced to the cultural history and science culture of both countries. These experiences will augment students’ intercultural competence.

The course starts each winter. The master thesis may be written in French or German.

Through its geographical situation and history, the University of Saarland maintains close relations with France. Paris can be reached by train within less than two hours; flight connections exist from Saarbrücken and the nearby airports of Zweibrücken, Frankfurt-Hahn and Frankfurt/Main.

Financial support is possible. Applicants finishing their BA during the summer may enclose a certified overview of subjects and marks.

This SEMPRE Postgraduate Study Day will be hosted by the Department of Drama and Music, University of Hull, and will precede the SEMPRE conference on 'Music and Familiarity' to be held on Saturday 24 October. Students are warmly invited to attend both events. The aim of the Postgraduate Study Day is to provide opportunities for research students to present and discuss ideas in a friendly and supportive environment, as well as to create a meeting place for students from different institutions. The event will include spoken presentations (20 minutes each), a poster display, and open discussions about research in music psychology and education led by invited academics. We welcome submissions from part-time and full-time students who

are undertaking research in music psychology and education. Accepted submissions will be broadly organized into themes and presentations will be chaired by leading researchers. Please send abstracts for spoken presentations (200 words) and for posters (100 words) by email to Dr Elaine King (contact details below) by 14 August 2009.

CFP: RSAMD Postgraduate Research Talks (Scotland)

CONNECTING RESEARCH: THE RSAMD POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH TALKS

Proposals are invited from research students to participate in the AHRC funded “Connecting Research: The RSAMD Postgraduate Research Talks”. This series of twelve talks will be given by graduate students currently working within the disciplines of music, drama and related areas. Current RSAMD research students are working on traditional as well as early music, gender studies, performance practice and composition. We welcome proposals from these and related areas, including the performing and visual arts. All forms of dissemination are invited: papers, lecture-recitals and performances are welcome. Preference will be given to practice-based research wherever possible. The talks will take place between February and July 2009.

Interested participants are invited to submit an abstract (not longer than 200 words in length) and brief CV via email to: c.guillaumier@rsamd.ac.uk. The closing date for submission of proposals to the committee is 31st January 2009.

The talks will take place at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. This research training initiative is jointly sponsored by the AHRC and the RSAMD. All selected speakers will have their travel expenses and one night’s accommodation paid. Participants will have the opportunity to present their work to a friendly and supportive audience made up of their peers as well as experts in the field. This forum will thus provide graduate researchers with the chance to present their work to a wide audience and to make connections with colleagues working in similar fields.

Queer Screen Cultures is an interdisciplinary postgraduate study day to be held at the University of Nottingham on May 5th 2009 in association with the MeCCSA Postgraduate Network. It is devised with the aim of bringing together researchers from across the UK who deal with issues of queer visibility and representation, and so making links across the disciplines and across the academic spectrum.

There has been a perceptible alteration in media representations of queer sexualities since the 1990s, on a global scale. The cultural visibility of queers has increased exponentially, with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters now routinely populating film, television and other digital media, and the mainstream press frequently covering gay and lesbian stories as a matter of course. This interdisciplinary event seeks to explore representations and negotiations of queerness in contemporary screen cultures, as well as their determinants, in addition to interrogating recent queer readings and "reclamations" of earlier screen texts. Supporting scholars from film and media studies, sociology, politics and cultural studies among other disciplines, the event will cover a number of themes and issues pertaining to on screen queer visibility, including but not limited to:

- Cultural mainstreaming and the political contexts of queer visibility;
- Film-making and queer aesthetics;
- Queer audiences and participatory cultures: for example, L Word theme parties;
- On-screen intersections of queerness and other identities: gender, ethnicity, etc;
- Queer "reclamations" of ostensibly non-queer films, television programmes, and other texts;
- "Textual poaching," queer appropriations and slash fictions;
- Queer adaptations;
- Trans and genderqueer visibility: representations and marginalisation;
- National and regional queer identities in cinema and media;
- The impact of digitisation and the multi-platform environment on queer visibility;
- Network branding and queer narrowcasting, as in the here! and Logo channels;
- Internet technologies and queer self-fashioning: YouTube and other online broadcasting.

Gary Needham of Nottingham Trent University, author of the forthcoming Queer TV, and Dr Michele Aaron of the University of Birmingham, editor of New Queer Cinema, will be delivering plenary lectures. There will also be a roundtable discussion which will bring together both speakers and delegates to debate 'the cultural mainstreaming of queerness.'

We invite proposals for 20 minute papers from postgraduate research students on any aspect of contemporary queer screen culture. Abstracts of between 200-250 words and any other enquiries should be directed to Natalie Edwards at aaxne@nottingham.ac.uk
