We would like to announce the establishment of the new electronic journal under the title HEJMEC (Hellenic Journal of Music, Education and Culture)

HeJMEC is an international open-access and peer reviewed journal devoted to critical study and critical analysis of issues related to the fields of Music, Education, and Culture.

HeJMEC draws its contributions from a wide community of researchers. Its reach is international since we want the publication to reflect a wide variety of perspectives from disciplines within the fields of music education and musicology. The journal is concerned with the dissemination of ideas relating to theoretical developments in the above fields and welcomes cross - and inter- disciplinary contributions of research and literature in the areas of music, education and culture.

Music and Education: The wide range of topics includes various aspects of music education (pedagogy, history, philosophy, sociology, psychology, technology, and aesthetics) addressing vocal, instrumental, general music at all levels, from early childhood through adult and comparative studies. Education is interpreted in a broad sense including all aspects of teaching and learning within formal and informal contexts (such as, musical development; socio-cultural issues; creativity; gifted and talented students; special needs; community settings; teachers’ professional development; curriculum design; assessment) in order, additionally, to challenge established accounts of music education policy-analytic methods and to explore alternative approaches to policy-making. Music and Culture: Our aim is to provide essential reading on different aspects of the study of music from a cultural point of view (ideology, music and words, music and society, music and postmodernism, music and genre,and so forth); also, to relate them with educational issues (music cultural policy, the learning process, the relationship to educational institutions, and so forth). The journal thus offers a unique forum for researchers to develop views on music as a social and cultural product, as part of human behaviour and in relation to broadly perceived educational issues at the leading edge of musical and multidisciplinary scholarship.

Every issue will include articles on the topics, case studies and book reviews. Articles in Greek or English will be accepted.

This SEMPRE Postgraduate Study Day will be hosted by the Department of Drama and Music, University of Hull, and will precede the SEMPRE conference on 'Music and Familiarity' to be held on Saturday 24 October. Students are warmly invited to attend both events. The aim of the Postgraduate Study Day is to provide opportunities for research students to present and discuss ideas in a friendly and supportive environment, as well as to create a meeting place for students from different institutions. The event will include spoken presentations (20 minutes each), a poster display, and open discussions about research in music psychology and education led by invited academics. We welcome submissions from part-time and full-time students who

are undertaking research in music psychology and education. Accepted submissions will be broadly organized into themes and presentations will be chaired by leading researchers. The SBCM - Brazilian Symposium on Computer Music is a biannual event with international recognition in the field of computer music organized by NUCOM, the computer music interest group of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC). This 12th edition will be held from September 7th to 9th, 2009, in Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco, at the beautiful northeast Brazilian coast, and is specially dedicated to approaching the relentless universe of new paradigms for making music with computers and electronic gears, bringing up their essentials and trends.

Researchers, scientists, composers, educators, manufacturers, and all concerned with the interplay between music and technology are invited to submit works.

During the symposium there will be speeches by renowned researchers, technical and music paper sessions, discussion panels, and concerts. The program will include, among others, a keynote speech by Miller Puckette (University of California, San Diego), author of Pure Data (Pd) real-time graphical programming environment, a tutorial on mathematical models in computer-aided music theory by IRCAM, and a keynote speech by composer Daniel Teruggi, director of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales at INA (Institut National De L'Audiovisuel, Paris).

We are proud to inform that a selection of the best papers presented at SBCM will be invited to submit an extended version for a dedicated Special Issue of the Journal of New Music Research, and the selected musical pieces will be published with the support of the Electronic Music Foundation (EMF). The program committee will also give a prize for the best student papers presented at SBCM. Papers that have a student as a major author are eligible. Two awards will be given: one for the best technical paper and another for the best music paper. One prize will be a one-year Forum IRCAM subscription.

Papers Submission Instructions

Papers must be submitted in PDF format via the JEMS online submission system (https://submissoes.sbc.org.br/). Submissions in Spanish, Portuguese and English are welcome.

Technical papers, up to 12 pages long, are supposed to present original research with scientific contributions. Music papers, up to 12 pages long, should describe the experience of composers and users of computational tools to produce music (see guidelines at conference website). Extended abstracts of posters, up to 4 pages long, should present on-going research.

Please carefully comply with instructions in publications templates. Papers which do not fulfill the requirements can not be published. Download the files for manuscript preparation in accordance with the SBC guidelines from http://gsd.ime.usp.br/sbcm/2007/templates.

In order to get the paper published, it is required that at least one author register for the symposium by August 3rd, 2009.

Panel: "Disciplining Entrepreneurship in Music Higher Education"

America's music schools are adopting entrepreneurship education at a steady rate. However, the lack of an accepted definition or conception of "entrepreneurship" has spawned a diverse range of curricular structuring. Concurrently, a lack of scholarship concerning these efforts has buttressed perceptions of "entrepreneurship education in music" as "business education for music students."

With new and progressive literature on entrepreneurship emerging from the economic, cognitive and social sciences, many Music Entrepreneurship programs (and students) have yet to reap the rewards of this scholarship. As this field emerges, developing a solid intellectual foundation is critical to the success and sustainability of these efforts.

The Puerto Rico Conference on Music Entrepreneurship invites papers that address Entrepreneurship education in American music training. We are particularly interested in papers that explore:

1. Theoretical or philosophical structuring
2. Curricular and program design
3. New approaches to pedagogy
4. Interdisciplinary connections
5. Conceptualizations of "Entrepreneurship" in the context of Music training
6. Continuities and discontinuities of entrepreneurship education in business and arts

The second day will feature the following three sessions:

Scholarly contributions are invited for a proposed journal focusing on the pedagogy of music history. Possible topics might include (but are not limited to): teaching philosophy, pedagogical theory, study approaches to specific works or topics, the development of specific courses (undergraduate, graduate, or general studies), and reviews of textbooks, teaching ancillaries, and other pedagogical materials. Selected essays will be collected as the inaugural volume of the journal, tentatively titled The Journal of Music History Pedagogy, to be submitted to potential publishers in the Spring of 2010. The first edition of the journal is projected to be published by Fall 2010.

The aim of LICE is to provide an opportunity for academicians and professionals from various educational fields with cross-disciplinary interests to bridge the knowledge gap, promote research esteem and the evolution of pedagogy. The LICE-2009 invites research papers that encompass conceptual analysis, design implementation and performance evaluation. POP CULTURE TOOLS IN THE MUSIC CLASSROOM

CALL FOR PAPERS

Authors are invited to submit potential contributions to an essay collection on using popular culture in undergraduate- and graduate-level music courses. The essays should focus on teaching and learning tools derived from popular culture, and may also include generalized considerations of popular-culture texts. The collection is intended to serve as a framework for course design or as a supplementary text in either pedagogy or music classes. Approaches
concerning methods of using popular culture to address either art or vernacular musics, from the disciplines of musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory and analysis, and performance studies are welcome. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

• electronic media such as mp3s and other digital audio; Ipod culture; streamed radio
• multimedia sources, including YouTube, music videos, television shows, movies, soundtracks
• videogames such as Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Dance Dance Revolution, and others
• online environments such as Second Life
• covers, versioning, parodies, mashups

Essays should be 6,000-10,000 words in length and conform to Chicago Manual of Style guidelines. Authors will be responsible for acquiring any necessary permissions for copyrighted materials included in their works. Text should be submitted as Word files (.doc or .rtf format), with musical examples in .tif, .pdf, .jpg, .gif, or .bmp format (.tifs are preferred).

The collection will be published by Scarecrow Press in 2010. Materials should be submitted electronically to Nicole Biamonte at by August 1, 2009. Please include:
1) a cover letter or message, including the author's name and essay title
2) an abstract of approximately 200 words
3) the proposed contribution, with author's name and other identifying information omitted
4) a brief biography (50 to 100 words)
5) a current cv
