The Oldman Prize Committee would like to invite suggestions for nominations for the C.B. Oldman Prize. The prize is an annual award of £200 for an outstanding work of music bibliography, music reference or music librarianship by an author resident in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland. Nominations are invited for works published in 2007 and 2008.

If you are aware of any publications you think ought to be considered for the prize, please contact me or another member of the Committee before the end of September.

The General Editors of Forum are pleased to announce that, in memory of the distinguished musicologist and Forum editor Peter Branscombe, the 2010 Forum Prize is on the subject of music and literature. Articles of up to 6,000 words are invited for the competition: the winning article will be published in the journal and the author will receive the sum of £200. Reflective, polemical articles on music and literature are especially welcomed and may relate to any area and period of English, French, German, Iberian, Italian, Latin American and Russian literatures, languages and cultures. For the purposes of the Forum Prize, the subject of music and literature is defined in its broadest sense.

Professor Peter Branscombe (1929-2008) is best known for his work on Viennese musical theatre, and on Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Wagner. He was Professor of Austrian Studies at the University of St Andrews and was for many years a valued contributor to and editor of Forum.

Application: Articles should be submitted according to Forum style and to the General Editor (articles) by 31 January 2010, marked "For consideration for the Forum Prize". Forum's normal peer review processes will pertain, and short-listed articles will also be judged by additional subject specialists. IGEB (the International Society for the Investigation and Promotion of Wind Music) issues a call for nominations for the 2010 Thelen Prize for dissertations in the field of wind music research.

Established to commemorate Fritz Thelen (1906–1993), one of IGEB’s co-founders, the Thelen Prize is awarded to the writer of an outstanding dissertation in the field of wind music research.

In addition to a plaque, the winner will be invited to present a paper at the next meeting of the Society, to be held in Oberschützen, Austria,July 22-27, 2010. The dissertation will also be considered for publication in IGEB’s Reprints und Manuscripts or the Alta Musica series. The titles and abstracts of all submitted dissertations will be announced in the Mitteilungsblatt, the Society’s Newsletter.

Nominations, including self-nominations, are invited for dissertations completed between 2007 (the last Thelen Prize) and October 2009. Dissertations may be on any subject concerning wind music, in any language, from any country, worldwide.

Prize/Competition: Philip Brett Award (AMS)

PHILIP BRETT AWARD

AMERICAN MUSICOLOGICAL SOCIETY

The Philip Brett Award, sponsored by the LGBTQ Study Group of the American Musicological Society, will honor each year exceptional musicological work in the field of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender/transsexual studies completed during the previous two academic years (ending June 30), in any country and in any language. By “work” is meant a published article, book, edition, annotated translation, a paper read at a conference, teaching materials (course descriptions and syllabi), and other scholarly work accepted by the award committee that best exemplifies the highest qualities of originality, interpretation, theory, and communication in this field of study.

The award consists of the sum of $500 and a certificate, and will be announced at the Annual Business Meeting and Awards Presentation of the Society and conferred at the annual meeting of the LGBTQ Study Group.The committee will entertain nominations from any individual, including eligible scholars who are encouraged to nominate their own work. Individuals may receive the award on more than one occasion.

Nominations should include the name of the scholar, a description of the work, and a statement to the effect that the work was completed during the previous two academic years. By “completion” is meant the publication or commitment to publish from an editor in the case of articles, books, editions, etc.; delivery at a conference or the like in the case of a paper. The committee will contact the nominee for additional material as needed. Self-nominations should include any unpublished material to be considered and a curriculum vitae. Nominations, with five sets of application materials, should be sent by July 1 to the chair of the Philip Brett Award Committee:

Award: 2010 Carol June Bradley Award (MLA)

At its 2003 annual meeting, the Music Library Association announced the establishment of the Carol June Bradley Award for Historical Research in Music Librarianship. Ms. Bradley is Librarian Emeritus at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and has been the foremost historian of music librarianship. This annual award, in the amount of $1,000, will be granted to support studies that involve the history of music libraries or special collections; biographies of music librarians; studies of specific aspects of music librarianship; and studies of music library
patrons' activities.

The grant will be awarded to support costs associated with the research process. These may include travel, lodging, meals, supplies, and digital, photocopy or microfilm reproduction of source material. There are no restrictions as to applicant's age, nationality, profession, or institutional affiliation. All proposals will be reviewed entirely on the basis of merit.

Applicants should submit the following documents:

1. A summary of the project, including planned results
2. A preliminary budget with justification for expenses
3. A current vita
4. The names of three references

Within one year of receiving the award, the recipient is required to submit a report on how the funds were spent, and on the progress of the work supported. Any publication of the recipient's work must state that this award helped to support the research process.

The deadline for receipt of applications is June 15, 2009. Applications received after that date will be considered for funding in 2010. Recipients will be notified by October 15, 2009 and announced at the MLA annual meeting in San Diego, California, which will be held from March 20 to 24, 2010. RMA Jerome Roche Prize - Deadline 15 May 9

The Jerome Roche Prize is awarded annually for a distinguished article by a scholar in the early stages of his or her career. Articles considered for the prize are in English and published in the previous calendar year. Articles may be considered from journals, edited volumes, or books of conference proceedings. Nomination may be made by any RMA member; the recipient need not be a member. Nominations and supporting documentation must be received by the Chair of Awards Committee, Dr Susan Wollenberg, by 15 May 2009.

The Society for American Music announces the 2009 competition for a dissertation on any topic relating to American music.

American music is interpreted in all its historical and contemporary styles and contexts, including, but not limited to art and popular musics, the musics of ethnic groups and minorities, and the full range of activities associated with music. "America" is understood here to embrace North America (Canada, The United States, and Mexico), including Central America and the Caribbean, and aspects of its cultures elsewhere in the world.

Eligibility
The dissertation must be in English, and must be for a degree awarded in calendar year 2008. Authors who entered the competition in a previous year may not enter again.

CFP: Donald Tovey Memorial Prize

DONALD TOVEY MEMORIAL PRIZE
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Board of the Faculty of Music at the University of Oxford proposes to award the Donald Tovey Memorial Prize in Trinity Term 2009.

The prize (which will be of the value of £2,000 but may be augmented should the need arise, at the discretion of the Board) is open to men and women without regard to nationality, age, or membership of a university. It may be awarded either:

(a) to assist in the furtherance of research in the philosophy, history, or understanding of music. In this case, candidates must satisfy the judges that their programme of research lies within this field, and should provide: a brief statement of proposed research; two testimonials; and two examples of original work (essays, articles, book chapters, etc., whether published or not) which demonstrate their fitness to undertake it. Nine-tenths of the prize-money will be paid to the prize-winner at the time of the award, and the remaining one-tenth on approval by the judges of a brief report indicating fulfilment of the programme;

or

(b) to assist in the publication of a work already completed in one of the subjects mentioned above. In this case, candidates should submit one copy of the work concerned and explain why the prize is needed in order to ensure publication.

In either case, it is hoped that the prize-winner will agree to deliver a lecture in the Faculty of Music disseminating the findings of the research.

Entries, which should include a list of the expenses associated with the project for which the prize is sought, must reach the Faculty Administrator and Board Secretary, University of Oxford, Faculty of Music, St Aldate’s,Oxford OX1 1DB, no later than Friday 12 June 2009.
