THE SYMPHONY AS CULTURAL PHENOMENON

CALL FOR PAPERS

Edward Elgar described the symphony orchestra as ‘the mighty engine, the vehicle of the highest form of art ever known to the world’, and from the 1880s onwards this widely held belief gave orchestral music a prominent place in British musical life. In the 21st century, however, such a position is perhaps no longer tenable.

Call for papers: The Programme Committee warmly welcomes proposals focusing on economic, political, social and cultural developments connected with the symphony orchestra and their effects on composers, performers, conductors, producers, artistic directors, back-room staff, recording engineers, public and private broadcasters, recording companies, publishers, critics, scholars, audiences, listeners, viewers, fundraisers, patrons, arts councils, and so forth; or the ‘outcomes’ of their activity, including, but not limited to, such things as scores, recordings, concerts, lectures, essays, books, criticism, interviews, commissions and contracts. Those submitting proposals may also wish to address the relationship between historical context and place (such as venues, cities, and countries), or the formation and dissemination of ideas about the orchestra.

Proposals of 250 words maximum are invited for the following:

• Papers (20 minutes maximum, with 10 minutes discussion)

Proposals of 650 words maximum are invited for the following:

• Themed paper sessions of three or four papers (to include a proposal of 300 words maximum outlining the purpose of the themed session, along with brief explanations of each of the individual papers to be included – each paper to be 20 minutes maximum plus ten minutes discussion)

Muntenia Philharmonic Targoviste and the University of Music Bucharest, under the patronage of the Romanian Ministry of Culture

The course is based on Sergiu Celibidache's "Phenomenology of Music". Konrad von Abel was the artistic assistant to Sergiu Celibidache at the Munich Philharmonic for more than 10 years. The course is not only for conductors but for anyone seeking a gateway to the intrinsic laws of music.

THE CLASS
There will be accepted 12 active participants. The number of audience members is unlimited!
The class will be held in English.

The class will be divided in 2 stages:

STAGE I
Sunday, June 21 ­ Thursday, June 26
General aspects of the teachings of Sergiu Celibidache on «Musical Phenomenology». Discovering the natural arm's weight in conducting as the foundation for communicating univocal musical impulses. Conducting exercises with piano and string quartet work covering the course repertoire.

Saturday, June 27 - Monday, June 29
Rehearsals and concert with Maestro Konrad von Abel followed by lessons.

STAGE II
Tuesday, June 30 ­ Saturday, July 4
Work with Orchestra. Two sessions (3 and 2 hours) a day followed by debriefing session. Each active participant will work ca 20 minutes a day with the orchestra.

The conference seeks to explore the economic, political, social and cultural developments connected with the Symphony Orchestra, and their reciprocal effects on music, individuals, institutions and places. By placing emphasis on a comparative, contextual approach, we aim to highlight local and national idiosyncrasies.

9TH INTERNATIONAL MUSIC THEORY CONFERENCE: PRINCIPLES OF MUSIC COMPOSING - ORCHESTRA AS PHENOMENON
VILNIUS, LITHUANIA

--Orchestral conceptions:
a) Approach of musicology to orchestra and orchestral nature (conceptions, notions, terminology);
b) Possibility for the definition of orchestra (orchestra – ensemble – soloist).

--Orchestra as a cultural tradition:
a) Orchestras of world regions (symphonic, gamelan, gagaku, ‘ethno‘, etc.);
b) Specific features of orchestral playing;
c) Possibilities for symbiosis of orchestral cultural types.

--Historical signs in the evolution of orchestra (orchestral school, style, genre, work, arrangement, etc.).

--Orchestra in the field of researches in acoustics and psychological perception.

--Functional and timbre possibilities of orchestra (orchestral structure, instruments, synthesis of timbres, etc.).

--Principles of orchestral thinking in contemporary music.

Paper proposals (abstract together with a short biography) should be sent to Mr. Marius Baranauskas: mbaranaus at yahoo.com . The abstract must not exceed 500 words. The duration of papers will be limited to 20 minutes, leaving 10 minutes for questions and discussions. Please indicate whether your proposal belongs to one or more of the conference sub themes.

The deadline for proposal submissions is March 8, 2009. The proposals will be reviewed by members of the organizing committee and all applicants will be notified of the outcome in the middle of March 2009.

The main language of the conference is English.

The material of the conference – abstracts and papers will be published.
