PHD CASE STUDENTSHIP WITH UNESCO CITY OF MUSIC PROJECT

Applications are now being accepted for an exciting opportunity to study a cultural management initiative in its beginning stages: a UNESCO City of Music project. This ESRC-funded CASE studentship with the University of St Andrews’ Institute for Capitalising on Creativity (ICC) will begin October 2009.

Applications must be submitted by June 30.

The UNESCO City of Music project will launch in September 2009, aiming to bring tangible benefits to the city, making it better through music. Successful advocacy will be supported by the CASE student’s research into the effectiveness of the organisation’s engagement and delivery strategies. This will involve

• providing research for the UNESCO City of Music project

• evaluating the project’s stakeholder engagement policy

• examining the project’s contribution to the cultural and creative industries

• assisting, supporting and enhancing project effectiveness

• engaging with a variety of stakeholders, including specialist and non-specialist music organizations

• applying appropriate theoretical perspectives from related fields

• sourcing and critiquing relevant literature

• interpreting research results for non-specialist and scholarly audiences

CASE students work closely with sponsoring organizations, providing industry-relevant research and enhancing social science research in the Creative Industries generally. Project supervision is provided by ICC academics and workplace mentors. Fees and maintenance are provided by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) over 3 years, leading to a PhD awarded by University of St Andrews.

The successful candidate must have a Masters degree and first degree in music, management, creative industries, cultural studies or other relevant area. Applicants must be UK nationals or EU nationals who have resided in the UK throughout the preceding 3 years.

CALL FOR PAPERS

This AHRC sponsored conference is organised jointly by the Centre for Film Studies and the Centre for Russian, Soviet and Eastern European Studies at the University of St. Andrews. It will bring together doctoral students from the United Kingdom and Europe, whose work is focused o the visual culture and cinema of the post-Communist period. The main objective is to launch a productive dialogue on methodological and practical issues affecting all those engaged in the study of the film and visual culture of the postcommunist period.

We invite participants from across Social Sciences and Humanities: Language, Literature, Culture, Law, International Relations, Politics, Media, Film and Television Studies, Art History, Architecture, Design, Museum Studies, Russian, German, East European languages and cultures, Law, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Publishing, and other disciplines.

Opening on Friday afternoon (5 pm) and continuing throughout the day on Saturday, the conference will feature thematic talks dedicated to the status of the field and the profession. Postgraduate participants will be able to present their work in the context of two sessions, at panels moderated by the featured speakers. You are welcome to discuss aspects of your work, and talk of its challenging and exciting moments.

We propose to structure the discussion in the context of the following questions:
· How are post-Cold War divisions reflected in cultural production in the former communist world?
· What are its specificities and what are the challenges for researching cultural production?
· How do the global and the local interplay in the region?
· Can the umbrella of "postcommunism" be explored as shared experience?
