Editor Needed: Asian Music (Journal of the Society for Asian Music)

EDITOR NEEDED: ASIAN MUSIC
SOCIETY FOR ASIAN MUSIC

The Society for Asian Music seeks to appoint a new editor for its journal, Asian Music. The incoming editor will work with our current editor, Stephen Slawek (University of Texas, Austin) starting Fall 2009 to facilitate the transition. Duties of the editor include accepting submissions, liaising with reviewers, and working with the University of Texas Press at all stages of the journal production. The journal editor is a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Asian Music, and the society provides up to $2500 a year of editorial support.

Interested applicants are requested to submit a 2-page curriculum vitae and a cover letter to Tong Soon Lee (tslee@emory.edu). Applicants should also note the kinds of support that may be available from their institutions (funds, research assistants, space, equipment, etc.). References may be requested by the Society's Board of Directors. For more specifics on journal editorship, please contact Stephen Slawek (slawek@mail.utexas.edu). Review of applications begins on May 25, 2009--we will continue to accept applications until the position is filled.

CFP: The Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology (TAPJA)

THE ASIA PACIFIC JOURNAL OF ANTHROPOLOGY (TAPJA)

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

I would like to draw your attention to The Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology (TAPJA), a journal whose editorial board is based at the Australian National University, and for which I am the multimedia reviews editor. On behalf of the editorial board, I would like to invite article submissions by ethnomusicologists to the journal, and in particular to invite submissions of multimedia material to be reviewed by the journal. The primary requirement is that article submissions, and submissions of material for review, must be related to research in anthropology in the Asia-Pacific region.

TAPJA welcomes article submissions from those working in the field of anthropology broadly speaking, and this includes ethnomusicology. The interest of the journal in music research is evident in the latest issue, edited by myself and Prof. Timothy D. Taylor, which is a special focus issue on contemporary music research in the Asia-Pacific region (TAPJA 10 (2), June 2009).

The multimedia reviews section of the journal was established in 2005, and continues to grow. We invite submissions of material for review, including audio recordings, documentary films, websites, and CD- or DVD-ROMs. So if you have been involved in any productions of such multimedia material and would like to see it reviewed, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

Transnational East Asian Cinema (Upcoming symposium) (Southampton)

TRANSNATIONAL EAST ASIAN CINEMA SINCE 1997

A one day symposium sponsored by Screen, hosted by the University of Southampton with Goldsmiths, University of London and the University of Hong Kong

The symposium will explore the relationship between cinematic representations and transnational cultural exchange, centred on one of the most active areas of cinematic activity over the past decade - East Asian cinema. It encompasses a broad range of topics that reflect upon how academia, filmmakers and the film industry have responded to the effects of globalisation, and the ways in which representations are read through the differing transnational contexts that exist between Asia and the West. Beyond cinema, our event will create a significant dialogue whose relevance relates to important issues surrounding globalisation and intercultural communication between East and West, as well as the status and function of Film Studies in different cultural contexts.

Attendance: We are currently seeking expressions of interest from those wishing to attend this student-organised symposium, due to be held at the University of Southampton on Saturday 06th December 2008.
